For this, the venerable first post, I thought we'd have ourselves a little nutritional smackdown, if you will. A battle between two extremes of what someone might have for their dinner. Namely, a burger, fries and a soda, and a giant green smoothie. Using data from Burger King, Health Canada and the USDA, I compared the nutritional value of a Burger King meal and a Green Smoothie made with kale, avocado, banana, dandelion leaves, cilantro and water.
See the results in all their glory here.
An exercise in absurdity? Maybe. But it serves to put things in perspective. Consider what would happen if you substituted one for the other on a regular basis. For instance, look at the vitamins section. In the Green Smoothie you get about sixty two thousand IU (International Units) of vitamin A. Damn. And in the BK meal? You get, um......none! At least none I could find any reference to online. Vitamin K? The Smoothie has 50 times more. Also three times the calcium and potassium and almost ten times less sodium.
Have a look at calories. I mean seriously, it's just ridiculous. 1686 for the BK meal. That's a lot of freaking calories, particularly considering 619 of those are from fat. The Green Smoothie clocks in at a cool 503 calories, and I could almost guarantee it would satisfy you more than the BK dead food.
Compare the calorie content and the nutritional content and you'll see that the raw vegan meal easily overpowers his opponent with his nutrient dense jiu jitsu.
Winner: Green Smoothie!
